Internships exist in a wide variety of industries and settings. An internship may be paid, unpaid or partially paid (in the form of a stipend). Paid internships are common in professional business, technology and advertising fields. Non-profit charities and think tanks have unpaid, volunteer positions. Internships may be part-time or full-time - typically they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer. They usually last 6–12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the company involved.

Volunteer
Many organizations take volunteers on a short or long term basis. Not only will this allow you to gain valuable experience prior to leaving university, it will also allow you to “try on” a career to determine if your skills and work preferences are a good fit. Most communities have a volunteer centre with a database of opportunities to get involved and give back to the community (and gain valuable experience at the same time).
To get involved while you are in Guelph, look for opportunities at:
Student Volunteer Connections [4] - works to ignite, educate, & foster University of Guelph students through the world of volunteerism.
The People and Information Network [5] - creates awareness of the power of volunteering, and connects people who want to give their time and talents.
